If you’re craving a comforting seafood dish that’s creamy, mildly spiced, and bursting with flavor, this Prawns Coconut Curry is the perfect recipe. Made with juicy prawns simmered in a coconut-based gravy, this curry is light yet indulgent and comes together in under 30 minutes.
This dish pairs beautifully with steamed rice, appam, neer dosa, or chapati and is perfect for both weekday meals and special occasions.
Ingredients
For the Prawns

500 g prawns / shrimp (cleaned & deveined)

¼ tsp turmeric powder

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper (optional)
For the Curry

2 tbsp coconut oil (or regular oil)

1 medium onion, finely chopped
-
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
-
1–2 green chillies, slit
-
1 sprig curry leaves
-
½ tsp turmeric powder
-
1 tsp red chilli powder (adjust to taste)

1½ tsp coriander powder
-
½ tsp black pepper powder
-
1 cup thick coconut milk
-
½ cup thin coconut milk or water
-
Salt to taste
For Garnish
-
Lots of freshly chopped coriander leaves

Optional: a few curry leaves
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Marinate the Prawns
In a bowl, add prawns, turmeric powder, salt, and black pepper.
Mix well and keep aside for 10 minutes.
2. Sauté the Base
Heat coconut oil in a pan on medium heat.
Add curry leaves and green chillies. Let them splutter.
Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and lightly golden.
3. Add Ginger & Garlic
Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
4. Add Spices
Lower the flame and add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and pepper powder.
Stir well for 30 seconds, adding a splash of water to prevent burning.
5. Cook the Curry
Pour in thin coconut milk (or water) and bring the curry to a gentle boil.
Add salt to taste.
6. Add Prawns
Drop in the marinated prawns and cook for 5–7 minutes until they turn pink and tender.
7. Finish with Coconut Milk
Lower the flame and add thick coconut milk.
Simmer for 2–3 minutes — do not boil after adding thick coconut milk.
8. Garnish & Serve
Turn off the heat and garnish generously with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot.
